- alarm tone
- Definition:
As long as you have set the alarm tone, ®Cyclotest reminds you during a cycle at the same time every day to take a measurement and repeats the process after 10 and 30 minutes respectively. The alarm call stops during the non-fertile phase after ovulation. The alarm function can be deactivated. To do so, briefly press the large yellow measurement button. When the bar chart (for alarm tone off) appears in the display, please press the button again./font>/font>
In this way, your display indicates that the alarm function is deactivated: Illu alarm tone off. To reactivate the alarm tone, simply press the yellow measurement button again.
®Cyclotest acknowledges your entry with a beep and the following display:Illu alarm tone on
- battery
- Definition:
When the device is regularly used, the battery will be enough for approx. 500 measurements. The battery must be replaced when the battery symbol appears. While the battery is being replaced, the data remain stored at cyclotest Customer Service.
- beep
- Definition:
The beep as an acoustic signal has three functions:
1) It acknowledges your entry with a long-drawn-out beep and provides you with the assurance that you have made the entry correctly.
3) It wakes you with five short beeps if you so wish.
2) It warns you with three short beeps if something is not OK with the entry or handling. - birth
- Definition:
If you wish to continue using ®Cyclotest after the birth of your child, start as usual after the onset of the first menstruation. Bear in mind that normally an ovulation has already occurred before this menstruation (often sufficient to cause an unplanned pregnancy).
- cleaning
- Definition:
Clean the housing and sensor from time to time with a mild cleaning agent (not too moist). Do not place in water.
- contraindication
- Definition:
It is recommended to use ®Cyclotest in all cases where natural family planning is preferred. It is not recommended (contraindication) to be used in the event of irregular working hours (shiftwork, long-haul journeys) and extreme, changeable cycles (puberty, illness).
- current day
- Definition:
When you press the right direction button, the current cycle day appears. By repeatedly pressing the left direction button, you can retrieve the temperature indications for previous days in the display.
- cycle
- Definition:cycle
The cycle has three phases:
- a relatively short non-fertile phase after menstruation
- a fertile phase which ends after ovulation
- a relatively long non-fertile phase
- data backup
- Definition:
The stored data are backed up by ®Cyclotest Customer Service while the battery is being replaced.
- data storage
- Definition:
®Cyclotest can store personal cycle data covering 12 cycles. You can therefore call up the data from the last 12 cycles. Press the right direction button twice to access the memory. Here you can read off the day of the temperature high (the 15th day in the example) and the day of the hormone high. By pressing and holding down the yellow measurement button, you can view the cycle length for each store cycle. If Cyclotest is not used for an extended period of time, the entire memory is automatically deleted after 99 days.
- direction buttons
- Definition:
Use the direction buttons to call up the information stored in the ⇒ display.
- display
- Definition:
Letters, numbers and symbols are used in the display to represent the data stored for a cycle.
What is displayed for
– previous cycles (up to 12): cycle length, day of temperature high and of hormone high (if entered)
– current cycles (up to 99 days): temperature - egg cell
- Definition:
The female egg cell remains capable of being fertilised for 12 to 18 hours.
- fever
- Definition:
Unusual temperature increases (e.g. fever) which are outside the measuring range of ®Cyclotest are indicated in the display by "H" (High). This temperature is not taken into account during evaluation and is not stored either. (An "H" for High appears in the display instead of a number when the data for this day are called up at a later stage). A clinical thermometer must be used for fever measurement.
- holiday/vacation
- Definition:
You can also continue your ®Cyclotest measurements as usual when you are on holiday provided you can measure your waking temperature in the prespecified ⇒ time window. In the event of longer time changes, stop the measurements. ⇒ Time change
- inadvertent button operation
- Definition:
Pressing the cycle-start button by mistake does not represent a problem provided the button is not pressed for a period in excess of 7 seconds. Pressing the measurement button by mistake likewise does not represent a problem if a measurement has not been taken.
- intermenstrual bleeding
- Definition:
There may be various causes that give rise to intermenstrual bleeding. If it turns out in retrospect that this is a regular menstruation and thus a short cycle, the start of the cycle must be at a later stage. Later entry of the start of the cycle is possible ⇒ start of cycle
- interrupted sleep
- Definition:
A brief interruption of your night's sleep (e.g. going to the toilet) does not compromise the reliability of ®Cyclotest measurement. It is important that you have slept for a total of 5 hours. Also, you should not have got up for a period of one hour before taking your waking temperature.
- late riser
- Definition:
®Cyclotest has provided for a "time window" of 4 hours for your measurements. In other words, if you take your first measurement in the cycle at 7.00 am, you can measure on the following days between 5.00 and 9.00 am. You can re-establish this time window with every first measurement in each new cycle. This enables you, for example, to take into account the changeover from summer- to wintertime and vice versa.
- long-distance data transmission
- Definition:
The stored cycle data can be forwarded (for a charge) "online" over the telephone line for graphic representation. This fertility profile can prove useful when you see your gynaecologist, who will be able to glean from it valuable indicators as to your cycle progression.
If you are interested in this service, call the following telephone number: 09342-924041. You will then be asked to leave your name, address and the serial number of your device after the tone. Then press the large yellow measurement button until “PHO” appears in the display. Then hold the opened cable reel to the mouthpiece. You will hear a whistling tone during transmission (approx. 30 seconds).
Then you can replace the receiver. You will receive a printout of your fertility profile within one week. - long-haul journeys
- Definition:
See "Time change"
- measurement
- Definition:
The user always measures her waking temperature in the morning before getting up. Missing a measurement does not compromise the system's reliability. However, measurements should be taken as thoroughly as possible in the fertile phase. It is important above all to take measurements shortly before, during and after ovulation. The non-measured days also appear in the display. Instead of a temperature indication you will see -- –. The registered values from a measurement are valid for 24 hours. If ®Cyclotest indicates in the morning that you are in your infertile phase, this applies until your next measurement the following morning.
- medicines/medication
- Definition:
Medicines can basically affect the processes associated with the cycle. Therefore ask your doctor beforehand.
- menopause
- Definition:
In women undergoing the menopause hormone fluctuations occur which make it more difficult to interpret the cycle. Thus, ovulation can be missed in one cycle and occur later in another cycle. In such cases, many women have found that they have observed their curves in parallel particularly during the menopause.
- Natural Family Planning (NFP)
- Definition:
Natural Family Planning is based on the thermal or symptothermal method, which narrows down a woman's fertile days. Conception is only probable during this phase.
- non-fertile phase
- Definition:
The cycle has three phases: – a relatively short non-fertile phase after menstruation – a fertile phase which ends after ovulation
–/font> a relatively long non-fertile phase/font>/font>
Deviations from the usual cycle duration – 28 to 29 days – of up to 5 days are perfectly normal. ®Cyclotest is programmed in such a way that even unusually long cycles are registered (46 days). In the event of highly fluctuating cycle lengths, a longer fertile phase is displayed as usual. When ®Cyclotest is used regularly, so many cycles are stored that the beginning and the end of the fertile phase of a cycle can be narrowed down still further. The non-fertile phase before ovulation is generally displayed only after six measured cycles. - ovulation
- Definition:
Ovulation occurs in the highly fertile phase to be expected. The time period of this phase can be narrowed down using the temperature method if a temperature high was found in the previous cycles. From the second measured cycle ®Cyclotest can display this phase with 2 standing babies. Furthermore, this time period of the greatest readiness for conception can also be narrowed down through detection of the ovulatory hormone in the urine. ®Cyclotest Ovulation Test is available for this purpose. We also recommend the ⇒ Symptothermal method.
See also ⇒ Natural Family Planning. - ovulation Test
- Definition:
You can use the ovulation test to detect the presence of ovulatory hormone in your urine. This enables the system to narrow down more accurately the time of your greatest readiness for conception. If the ovulatory hormone is detected, you can store the information in the ®Cyclotest. Cyclotest Ovulation Test is available in all good pharmacies.
- pregnancy
- Definition:
®Cyclotest already indicates a possible pregnancy 18 days after a registered temperature high: /font>
/font>/font>However, this display also appears if you forget to start your new cycle on time. In this case, you should enter the start of the cycle subsequently. If you do not take any measurement for an extended period of time, ®Cyclotest deletes for safety reasons your measurement data after 99 days at the latest. Only your individual average temperature remains stored./font>/font>
- reference temperature
- Definition:
Temperature measurement by ®Cyclotest is accurate to two decimal places.
At the start the reference temperature is set to a value of 36.75°C. Already in the second cycle a new reference value is calculated from your personal measurement data from the first cycle. If instead of the temperature indication "E" for Error appears, this may be down to the fact that you have removed the sensor from your mouth too early during measurement or the sensor is faulty and must be replaced. In the event of unusually high temperatures, e.g. ⇒ fever, the value is likewise not registered.
An "H" for "High" appears in the display - reliability
- Definition:
®Cyclotest is a diagnostic unit which can be used to narrow down still further the beginning and the end of your fertile phase. Results of research into the temperature and symptothermal methods form the basis of the development of ®Cyclotest. These methods if used properly offer a high degree of reliability of over 97% (Pearl index 1-3).
- sensor
- Definition:
The temperature is calculated by means of the sensor. To ensure a reliable measurement, it is important for the sensor to be resting steadily under the tongue with your mouth closed.
- shiftwork
- Definition:
It is recommended to use ®Cyclotest in all cases where natural family planning is preferred. It is not recommended (contraindication) to be used in the event of irregular working hours (shiftwork, long-haul journeys) and extreme, changeable cycles (puberty, illness).
- sperm
- Definition:
Male sperm cells (sperm) normally have a lifespan of up to four days. If you are planning for a baby, you can narrow down still further the time of your greatest readiness for conception by detecting the ovulatory hormone ( ⇒ Ovulation Test).

- spotting
- Definition:
Spotting can occur immediately before actual menstruation. If an excessively early cycle start has been entered by mistake, the entry can be subsequently corrected. See also "Start of cycle".
- start of cycle
- Definition:
The start of the cycle must be entered in each case on the first day of menstruation. You can also make this entry in the course of the day, but then measure on the following morning only. Inadvertent operation of the cycle-start button is ignored. Only after 7 seconds will the entry be accepted. Should it transpire that an incorrect start date has been entered, you have the opportunity of subsequently correcting the start of the cycle by no later than the 15th cycle day:To do so, press and hold down the small round grey cycle-start button and then keep pressing the right direction button until your current cycle day appears. Continue to hold down the start button and wait for the beep, with which ®Cyclotest acknowledges the entry.

What is displayed for– previous cycles (up to 12): cycle length, day of temperature high and of hormone high (if entered)– current cycles (up to 99 days): temperature - symptothermal method
- Definition:
The classic symptothermal method involves - in addition to measuring the waking temperature - analysing the mucus in the vagina (cervical mucus). The established "mucus peak" is entered on the following day as well as the "hormone high" (Ovulation Test) in the ®Cyclotest. However, you do need some level of practice and experience to be able to reliably evaluate the cervical mucus. If you would like to find out more about this method, please contact the German Natural Family Planning team at /font>/font>

- Definition:
A special measurement technique which registers your waking temperature precisely to two decimal places has been developed and patented for Cyclotest. In the first cycle this reference temperature is set to 36.75°C. Already in the second cycle an individual reference value is calculated from the personal measurement data from the first cycle. The more cycles are available, the more the reference value will correspond to your personal average temperature. ®Cyclotest is thus exclusively set to your personal situation and should not under any circumstances be used simultaneously by more than one person or passed on to others without the data first being deleted. See also ⇒ L (Low) ⇒ H (High)
- time change
- Definition:
The time changes that occur during long-haul journeys are for the most part so big that your waking time is outside the ⇒ "time window" in which ®Cyclotest accepts your measurement. If you can start your cycle immediately before or during the long-haul journey and take the first measurement at your destination, then ®Cyclotest can be used. In all other cases, please call the Information Line.
- time window

- „E“
- Definition:
The error message "E" (Error) in the display may appear if the sensor is not resting steadily under the tongue. If "E" continues to be displayed after the measurement is repeated, call the Information Line.
- „H”
- Definition:
Unusual temperature increases (e.g. fever) which are outside the measuring range of ®Cyclotest are indicated in the display by "H" (High). This temperature is not taken into account during evaluation and is not stored either. (An "H" for High appears in the display instead of a number when the data for this day are called up at a later stage). A clinical thermometer must be used for fever measurement.
- „L“
- Definition:
A flashing "L" (Low) in the display means that the sensor is in the warming-up phase and will then display your waking temperature after a few seconds.
